Explore the Hidden World of Microplastics and Nanoplastics

Curious about what microplastics and nanoplastic look like? Come and explore, count, and talk with us about this tiny, fascinating—yet alarming—world. We will look through microscopes, produce and manipulate art.
Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time, and tiny plastic particles—microplastics and nanoplastics—are everywhere. They come from everyday items like packaging, clothing, and cosmetics, breaking down into even smaller fragments that spread through water, soil, and air. But what actually happens to them? And what can we do about it?
Join two researchers from Lund University as they take you on a hands-on exploration of these invisible pollutants. One studies microplastics in waste products, the other investigates nanoplastics in groundwater. Together, they will guide you through the journey of these tiny particles—where they come from, how they travel, and where they end up. You’ll even get to see them up close and interact with them in surprising ways.
Throughout the week 5-10 May
An interactive display will be open for visitors at the first floor of Stadshallen. You’ll have the chance to contribute to an evolving installation and engage with informative materials.
Don't miss our special event on Thursday! 8 May 14:30-16:30
Meet the researchers, look through a microscope to discover and count microplastics, and take part in a unique art project where science and creativity come together.
The event is part of Sustainability Week 2025, which runs between 5-10 May. Sustainability Week is an annual event in Lund organised as a joint venture by Lund University and Lund municipality. The week serves as a platform for bringing together ideas, raising public awareness and for inspiring sustainable change.
